  • Parabens – preservatives found in many personal care products that has been linked to cancer
  • Fragrances – some unknown chemicals and others that may cause hormone disruption and serious allergic reactions
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – may cause liver and kidney damage, skin conditions, neurological problems and cellular changes
  • Aluminum – may cause breast cancer, kidney problems, bone disorders and Alzheimer disease
  • Triclosan – has been linked to birth defects, weak immune system, thyroid hormone disruption and weight loss

This is just a short list of some of the chemicals found in deodorant and a few of the main side effects. However, it shows that what you put on your skin can be dangerous to your health. Your skin absorbs these chemicals directly into the blood stream when you apply the deodorant. As they make their way through your body, they can cause a wide variety of health problems that you could avoid by making your own deodorant.

Simple Essential Oil Deodorant Recipes

Solid deodorant recipe with essential oils

Making your own deodorant is a lot easier than you might imagine and there are many recipes to choose from. One of the simplest recipes uses a few things you probably have in your pantry right now:

  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of organic coconut oil (this is my favorite!)
  • 1/2 cup of cornstarch
  • 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Some of the favorites for women are lavender, sage, tea tree (mix them all up), and for men tea tree, cypress and peppermint. I add tea tree oil to mine, because of its antibacterial properties.

To make the deodorant, place the coconut oil in bowl (it helps if you melt it a bit: just put the bowl in a pan with hot water for a few minutes). Mix in baking soda and cornstarch, and add your oils at the end. Store in a glass jar. Apply with your fingers.

Glass Amber Spray Bottle 2 fl oz (59 ml) BottleGlass Amber Spray Bottle 2 fl oz (59 ml) Bottle If you prefer a spray deodorant, you have a couple different options:

  • in a 2 oz glass tinted spray bottle, add 50/50 combination of water and vinegar, and then  add 30 drops of essential oils of your choice (or a blend). If you need suggestions, here are my favorites: lemongrass, lavender, tea tree, rosemary and geranium. I also LOVE citrus oils, but they are photo-toxic, which means you can not expose your armpits to the sun. This is easy during the cold months of the year, but not during summer, so be careful.
  • if you’d rather not use vinegar for your deodorant spray, use the same 2 oz amber glass bottle, add your oils (30 drops of any combination of oils you love), then fill the bottle with witch hazel.

I like having a few of these using different oils:

  • lavender and ylang-ylang
  • lavender, rosemary and lemon (remember that lemon oil is photo-toxic)
  • cedarwood and tea tree oil (for my hubby)
  • lemongrass and rosemary
  • lime essential oil deodorant, for when I need a perk!

You may need to experiment with different recipes until you find the ones that work the best for you. Once you do, you can begin taking advantage of all the benefits that making your own deodorant blends.
